Learning activities in the STAR Accent Reduction program
It is only in order to communicate in the English Language without traces of accent. To gain the ability to speak without the accent traces you may require enrolling in a school like the Royal Canadian Institute of International Studies (RCIIS) to undertake a course in Accent reduction (STAR Accent reduction). In this course, a learner is trained to move the muscles involved in articulation to produce utterances that are close to the native-like English. This may involve a lot of practice in speaking because the ultimate goal is to speak without interference from the learner’s first language. For one to interact globally without the issue of accent forming a communication barrier, one needs to practice intensely with the guidance of a qualified professional.
To train the leaner’s oral muscle movement in order to aid in accent reduction, a lot of learning activities involving speaking are greatly encouraged in the classroom. Outside the classroom the learner is given take-away assignments to keep them on their toes in practicing speaking English without accent. At times accent traces in our language may hinder communication because the person listening may misinterpret information when they perceive utterances wrongly. This learner to whom English is a second language will require a native professional’s assistance to acquire the speaking skills necessary to achieve a native-level English proficiency. The professional therefore ought to have a TEFL certification in order to have the skills required in instructing learners to achieve the desired qualities. This is a basic requirement at RCIIS to be employed as a teacher.
To achieve accent reduction, learning involves a lot of role play and stage acting in order to improve on speaking skills. Students also learn through activities like group discussions and classroom debates. This is meant to engage the student in active learning and more so in speaking in order to develop the competencies desired. The teacher therefore is required to have extensive knowledge in theatre skills in order to give guidance in stage acting, role play and other classroom activities that are undertaken in the STAR accent reduction program.
To keep track of the achievement of the learners each class consists strictly of twelve students. This aids in keeping a standard ratio of students to teacher. Keeping track of the students may involve ensuring that every student participates in each and every activity given in the class. The teacher will correct the students whenever they go wrong. The students make oral presentations and through them the teacher is able to tell the specific areas of weaknesses in each individual learner and come up with the tools necessary in correcting the leaner’s mistakes. The teacher designs strategies that he deems appropriate to suit the needs of learners with difficulties in learning.
Pronunciation is cautiously monitored in the learning activities because it is a key area of focus in accent reduction. This therefore will require the learner to monitor their muscle movement every time they are speaking in order to avoid interference of first language accent in their speech. This keeps them on their toes and more so enable them to acquire accent reduction in their speech in the long run.
